Interested in getting involved in the Parish Pastoral Council?
Purpose of the Parish Pastoral Council – The primary advisory group for a pastor is the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). As Canon Law #536 notes, “through it the Christian faithful along with those who share in the pastoral care of the parish in virtue of their office give their help in fostering pastoral activity. This pastoral council possesses a consultative vote only …” The PPC provides advice, for a vision of what can be done, for assistance in deciding among the many good things that could be done which ones should get priority in staff time and financial resources.
The apostles and the presbyters met together to see about the matter. After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to them, “My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made His choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the work do the gospel and believe….
The whole assembly fell silent, and they listened… (Acts 15: 6-7, 12)
Responsibilities – To be an effective, committed, consistent, and visionary group to help Pastor to govern the parish. This thoughtful group will provide input, suggestions, advice on what we should do, and what should be dropped. As in the early church, this group should debate and bring different perspectives about a parish topic allowing our Pastor to make an informed decision. The PPC meeting should not be primarily reporting in nature. PPC members are not to implement the plans, but help with research and recommend reasonable ways of how to accomplish plans and ideas. Members are responsible to be familiar with agenda and background materials prior to the meeting.
