Baptism

What is
Baptism?

Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments and the gateway to the Christian life. Through water and the Holy Spirit, Baptism washes away original sin, grants sanctifying grace, and initiates the individual into the Body of Christ. Jesus himself was baptized, and through this sacrament, we follow his example.

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.”

Baptism Preparation Class

You are required to attend a class if this is your first child, or if it has been 3 or more years since you have taken a baptism class. The class is offered every other month in Jan, Mar, May, July, Sept, and Nov.

Baptisms are typically held on the first & third Sundays of the month at noon, or during a weekend Mass on Saturday or Sunday.

It is essential that you have at least one sponsor that is Catholic, age 16 or older, fully initiated – (Baptized, Confirmed, and receiving Communion) and actively practicing their faith. If you have two, one is to be male and the other female. A second sponsor doesn’t have to be Catholic, but must be baptized and practicing as a Christian. Such a person will be designated a “Christian Witness”.

Catholic Godparents must complete a “Baptism Godparent/Sponsor Form” and return it to the Parish Office. Non-Catholic Sponsors do not need to complete the form, but are encouraged to read the “How to be a Godparent” booklet.

There are three documents needed prior to scheduling the Baptism.

  1. The Baptism Information Form,
  2. A copy/snapshot of your child’s birth certificate
  3. Godparent/Sponsor Forms for Catholic Godparents.

You may send them to the church office by email, drop box, or postal mail.

No, there is not a fee for Baptism. Some couples choose to give a gift to the parish, but this is completely optional. (A typical gift is $50 – $75)

What To Expect on
Baptism Day

The Baptism ceremony is a sacred and joyful event. During the service, the priest or deacon will:

  • Pray for the individual being baptized.
  • Bless the water used for the sacrament.
  • Anoint the individual with holy oils.
  • Pour water over the individual’s head, saying:
“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
  • Present the baptized with a white garment and a baptismal candle as symbols of new life in Christ.
