Opportunities to get involved in Music Ministry at St. Joseph!
607 – Adult Choir (Praise Ensemble)
The music ensemble unifies and assists the assembly’s sung prayer and supports the liturgical action through music. A member should enjoy singing with a group, willing to proclaim the Word of God through song and cooperate for the combined sound under the direction of the director. The ability to read music is a benefit but not a requirement. No auditions are required. The physical requirement to be able to climb and descend a flight of stairs into the choir loft. Time commitment: Weekly rehearsals, one and a half hours per week. Rehearsal days and times vary depending on the music ensemble, plus time at Mass with arrival forty-five minutes prior to warm-up and practice.
608 – Cantor (Youth & Adult)
The cantor unifies and assists with the assembly sung prayer and supports the liturgical action through music in the absence of a choir. A successful cantor enjoys singing and is willing to proclaim the Word of God through song. The ability to read music is important. A Cantor needs to project singing with the ability to be understood in a clear tone while maintaining pitch and song rhythm. Cantors can work in a team to enhance these qualities. Time commitment: Time to study the music at home and prepare prior to scheduled Mass is important. Arrive 45 minutes prior to Mass for warm-up and practice. Audition required.
609 – Handbell Choir (Youth & Adult)
The bell choir enhances and supports the music at Mass and other special liturgies. It may be part of sung liturgies as well as during contemplative prayer moments. A successful bell choir member is willing to work as a team to play music. The ability to read music and understand rhythm is important but is not required and can be easily taught. Physical ability to hold the various size bells and swing with an arm and wrist motion using both hands and the ability to climb and descend a flight of stairs to choir loft is required. Time commitment: Rehearsals will be held during the week for one to one and a half hours as indicated.
610 – Accompanist (Youth & Adult)
The accompanist is able to play the piano and/or organ to support the assembly sung prayer. The ability to play piano proficiently is a requirement. This does have a paid option. Audition required.
611 – Instrumentalist (Youth & Adult)
The instrumentalist enhances and supports the assembly’s sung prayer. The ability to read music is required. Guitar, woodwinds, and strings are the most needed instruments but also welcome are brass and percussion. A successful instrumentalist is able to perform the music with proficiency. Audition required.
Time commitment: Varies by instrument, ability, and availability
612 – Youth Ensemble
The choir unifies those gathered to worship through music, assists the assembly’s sung prayer, and supports the liturgical action through music. A member should enjoy singing and be willing to proclaim the Word of God through song. The ability to read music is a plus, not a requirement. Youth from grades 7 – 12 are invited to join.
613 – Resurrection Choir
The Resurrection Choir sings at funerals at St. Joseph Catholic Community. They meet 45 minutes before funerals to warm up and rehearse and provide music ministry to grieving family and friends of the deceased. Time commitment: About 2 hours, funerals are typically at 10:30 am or 11:00 am.
623 – Children’s Choir
If you are a child in grades 1-4, we’d love to have you sing in the newly formed Children’s Choir! We meet on Mondays from 3:30-4:00 pm in the Choir Loft and supply beautiful music to the Mass a few times a year. The frequency and volume of that music depends on how many are able to join the consistently attend.
